A lot of discussion on these boards has to do with frustrations about the types and/or lack of images of people of African descent in popular culture. One difficulty, of course, is that more folks who feel that way are not on the production, distribution, and other "behind the scenes" ends of these images. I would welcome folks sharing what they know about people, organizations, etc that are making inroads in these areas. Please share info, web links, names of organizations, etc. Personally, I am particularly interested in this topic from the standpoint of children's TV and movie programming. Thank you! |

Or, have any skinny on BET's new animation division? http://www.comicon.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=004660 FUTURE OF BET PROGRAMMING WILL BE ‘ANIMATED’ Entertainment President Reginald Hudlin Hires Three Top Executives In Newly-Created Posts, Including the Network’s First-Ever Animation Exec LOS ANGELES (January 10, 2006) – BET President of Entertainment Reginald Hudlin continues to shape the management structure of BET’s programming division with the second wave of executive hires. Hudlin, who has only been in his post since July, has now brought aboard a trio of new senior executives as part of a strategy to expand BET’s original programming. Among those new hires is an executive to execute Hudlin’s plans for developing a first-ever animation production arm for BET. Denys Cowan, most recently Producer and Supervising Director for Sony Television Animation on the Boondocks series for Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” programming block, joins BET as Senior Vice President for Animation, under a newly-structured BET Entertainment Group. A 15-year veteran of the entertainment industry, Cowan was also the chief creative force behind the Static Shock animated series from Warner Brothers Animation that earned him consecutive Emmy Award nominations from 2001-2003. In addition to developing animated series for the channel, Cowan’s responsibilities include creating animated product for the home video market as well as online and wireless. “Denys took Static Shock, a comic book character he co-created, and turned it into a hit series for Kids’ WB and the Cartoon Network,” said Hudlin. “He was also incredibly instrumental in making the Boondocks a hit. He’s a team player who knows how to make it happen”...

BET animation? --uh oh. People like the Wayans' and the guy who made "House Party" were okay for their time (early 90's) but now they have become cliche'd and it's time for new reperesentations of black people. I know some people can't stand "Boondocks" but at least it's A LITTLE different from the black animated programs that came before it. A lot of animated programming has become cliched. Even NOW you either have the black super-dad with the wife and typical "teenage girl-preteen boy-toddler girl" order of children. Then you have the urban super hero, never just a superhero, but an URBAN super hero. And last but not least, the ordinary girl (either voiced by raven symone or kyla pratt)and her life with her family, and that's it, nothing more. These aren't BAD ideas but they've been DONE TO DEATH!!!! God, even black people are running out of ideas. I can't wait to get the HELL out of college so I can get finish my OWN ideas!

Chris - That was from Booker T. Washington "A ship lost at sea for many days suddenly sighted a friendly vessel. From the mast of the unfortunate vessel was seen a signal, "Water, water; we die of thirst!" The answer from the friendly vessel at once came back, "Cast down your bucket where you are." A second time the signal, "Water, water; send us water!" ran up from the distressed vessel, and was answered, "Cast down your bucket where you are." And a third and fourth signal for water was answered, "Cast down your bucket where you are." The captain of the distressed vessel, at last heeding the injunction, cast down his bucket, and it came up full of fresh, sparkling water from the mouth of the Amazon River." |

OK, D23. No rush. Mainly I thought that we might all share w/each other. I'd hate to cut into your, er, recreation time. (LOL) Now, I did find something else related to this: the site is called The New Media Collective, defined on the site as "an information resource and social network for and about people of color in the digital media making community." Check it out: http://www.newmediacollective.org/ |
