Some months ago this board was afire with denunciations of Kelly and his fans, laments about the plunging morals of Black America for listening to his music and attending his concerts. I ain't heard a peep about those cases against him. So, could it be he was telling the truth about getting set up all the time? Or did he pay out the big bucks--and what does this say if he did--a la Kobe and Michael Jackson? |

I haven't kept up with R. Kelly, but I read this in the news yesterday: Sacramento Judge Denies Use of 'R. Kelly' Slang Term The Associated Press Published: February 24, 2006 SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Prosecutors said they had to drop a case against a man accused of trying to accost an 11-year-old girl because a judge wouldn’t allow testimony about a slang term involving R. Kelly. Tamiko Carter, 30, approached the girl last September while she was walking to school and asked her how old she was, prosecutors said. When she told him she was 11, Carter allegedly asked whether she had a boyfriend, “then told her he was fixing to do an ‘R. Kelly.’” Carter allegedly pulled his car to the curb and opened the door, but the girl ran away. Kelly, a singer from Chicago, has pleaded not guilty to 14 counts of child pornography in Cook County Circuit Court. The charges stem from a February 2002 videotape that allegedly showed Kelly and a 14-year-old performing numerous sex acts. The prosecutor’s office said Kelly’s name is now listed in the “Urban Dictionary” as a verb that means to have sex with an underage girl. Prosecutors had planned to present testimony from the 11-year-old girl and an expert witness who would testify that Carter was referring to that definition. But Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Lloyd Phillips refused Thursday to allow the testimony, and the district attorney’s office said it couldn’t pursue the case without it. Kelly, whose first name is Robert, won a Grammy for the gospel-like song “I Believe I Can Fly.” He’s also known for sexually charged music such as “Bump N’ Grind” and “Ignition.” http://sacunion.com/pages/sacramento/articles/7831 http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=R+Kelly |

I saw the video. R. Kelly got away with his crimes because nobody gives a damn about little black girls. Many in the black community claimed that the 14 year old was just a "slut" anyway ...but how does a 14 year old learn how to be a slut? Who taught her? In what community? And Chris you had the nerve to talk about brothers and sisters in Africa not being able to get their act together----it seems to me that black people everywhere; worldwide have become trash. America gives you your ACT--you don't have to get one together. We are expected to do no more than just be a nigger who hates its own image and fail to protect its women and children. That's what happened to the Kelly case.

Kobe Brown got off because he should have. As much as I can't stand him--his accuser was a scheming golddigger. The most popular white kind...that black rappers DON'T write songs about. And Kobe's wife is basically the same, just smarter--because at least she has a wedding ring to go with that $4 million "sorry for cheating" ring and a $4 million gift house for her Mother. I would kill my goddamned son.

WOW! How cool, Mzuri. I love these icons you're able to insert. I would ask how, but I'm sure they're too complicated for me. It's good to see you.

Hi Ms. Kola, Those little GIFs aren't complicated at all. They can be found on the net and they are uploaded the same as a regular image. |

Off topic (sorry-maybe I'll start a new thread)--but Kola, tell me more about your feelings about being called "Ms. Kola." I ask because I wrote about this recently and got some very interesting responses along racial and regional lines. Oh, and as for R, he just proves that when we speak of famous, talented Black men on one side and women, girls and children on the other--well, you know who the majority in our community will support, don't you? I have mixed feelings about Boobdocks, but Mr. Aaron was dead-on with the episode about R. |

Hi Ms. Kola, I am very formal in real life. I was employed by the Dept of Army for about 25 years (plus my Dad was in the Army too) so everyone is Sir or Ma'am or whatever. I think it's very important to be polite. Just do a search for "emoticons" or "gifs" to find a website that has them and when you find one that you like, save it to your computer like a normal pic. It can be any type of image, either still or moving. The little animated ones are called GIFs. |

Hi Yvette, I was raised by North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia blacks. Everybody was "Miss Eula" or "Miss Laurie" or something. I like that. And it sounds endearing when someone says, "Miss Kola". It means you're that person's family or Auntie. Someone they trust who is also an authority.

Mzuri, your post makes me want a pepsi right now. I've lived in the south all my life, and I hate coke. Anyways, back on topic: I hate that bitch ass R. Kelly. And the fact that a 14 year old can be a "slut" while a grown man is is excused from that same behavior as if he doesn't know better speaks volumes about how we view females and children in this society. I hate hearing "well, girls are supposed to know better because they're more mature." That's just bullshit they give us to make the female RESPONSIBLE for an act that a male is too "immature" to know enough about to be punished for. My ass. |

Last I heard his brother was releasing a DVD about Kelly and his perveted appetite for children. It is also reported that on this DVD his brother reveals that Kelly is bisexual. I don't know how true this is, I read it on another message board. Usually I wouldn't even bother reprinting hearsay, but he got away with murder. Fuck him! I think I hate him so much because there are so many R.Kelly's in the black community who hurt our children and we NEVER hold them accountable. We don't love them enough to fight for them. Worst part is that he has NEVER even admitted to his crimes and probably will hurt another young girl again, because he is in denial. As is the Black community. We should be ASHAMED!!!!!

Perhaps,(as ignorant as it is) if it is true that he is bisexual, our homophobia will kick in and we may stop supporting him then. |

Kola: The brothers and sisters over in Africa are dealing with the hand they got dealt when the colonial powers drew the boundaries of those "countries" that had nothing to do with history or ethnic groupings or the desires of the indigenous populations--often they fixed those boundaries so that ethnic groups that were enemies were put together in the same "state" or so tribes and clans wound up on different sides of the borders. The superstate is the political unit of the 21st century--the huge continent spanning unit with hundreds of millions of people and millions of square miles of territory. China. India. Russia. The U.S. Brazil. Don't have that and you get pushed around. Think of it. Suppose Louisiana was a separate state--after Katrina they would be as bad off as any African nation suffering disaster. What offers the U.S. resilience is that areas unaffected by drought, flood, etc can shift resources to the affected areas. The problems in Africa are not due to lack of resources, but lack of ability to shift them. This could only come if the whole of subsaharan Africa was unified. Now of course somebody will come in and talk about how they would give up freedom, blah blah blah--but we got a Texan in the White House that plenty of people didn't want. Africans are not getting the just amount for their resources. People are able to go in and destroy the whole ecological balance, like those guys did by dumping one bucket of fish into that lake in the Darwin's Nightmare movie. The maker of that movie was on the radio here recently. He played this recording of a 14 year old girl singing. He said the girl had been knifed to death by an Australian who paid off the local authorities so he could skip the country. This sort of thing goes on here and then the Feds step in--sometimes. |

Nobody has chimed in with what I think happened to his case: 1) (although I think some of you hit at it) the victim was a BLACK female. The press and the public is not howling for her to be avenged. 2) We will need Cynique on this--isn't the case set in Chicago? If so, he may have been spreading around those "campaign contributions" so that the case goes away--if yez know what I mean. |
