Last night I think that I had an apiphany-apifany or however its spelled... anyway, last night was the very first time that I have ever been called a Nigger, or atleast to my face...
I was stranded in Miami, and I couldn't find a ride, so I had no choice but to take a cab home... We got in front of my house, and before the driver would let me out to get the money inside, he wanted all of my posessions... Now I agreed to give him my I.D. and to leave the things I brought from the store in the car... Well, this wasn't good enough for him. He wanted my cell phone too, we kind of got into it, because I didn't want to leave my phone...So he asked for my whole wallet, I gave it to him and I went to get the money... Mind you, we're right in front of my house, and I live in a gated community in the suburbs, so it's not like I could run because there is no place to hide, unlike if I lived in an apartment complex or something....
Anyway I went inside, I gave him $30 and he said that the fare was $34... I didn't want to go back in the house to get $4 so I told him I didn't have it. He replied to me and said, "next time don't try that shit." So I took my stuff out of his hands and I told him to get the fuck out of here. He got out the car and he asked what did I say like he wanted to fight or something. I turned back around and repeated it for him so that this time he could hear me clear. Words were exchanged and all I remember is he said you fuckin Nigger. Then I went on a 15 second rampage calling him every name I could think of, and when I was done I went inside and he drove off. The messed up thing is that when I checked all of my cards and my wallet, I noticed that he still had my I.D.
I felt so violated... I kind of wish that I had replied in different way, instead of expressing my limited vocabulary of curse words... but a part of me felt good because I knew he drove away feeling hurt. That's what I like about curse words, when you use them you can get an immediate reaction, and I knew I mad him feel like shit... But I felt like shit too.
The cab driver was either hispanic or Jewish... I couldn't really tell because his speech was wierd... but I doubt he was Jewish... I never seen one of them driving a cab... Bottom line is that he was white. I try to tell people that not all white people are racist, but after last night my perception has changed. I realized that a lot of them probably dream about the day when they will be able to use the word Nigger. That word made so many emotions come up. I was angry, embarrassed, disrespected.... I'm stilla little shaken up over the whole thing... but I'm glad it happened. It's opened up my eyes a little more as to how people really do look at black people.
Have any of you ever been called a nigger??? Or do ya'll think I should have reacted in a different way???....

Cabbies are crazy. And you must know that this cabbie was itching to bust you in the face as soon as he turned into the gated community which is your home. There was definitely a haterish element to this conflict, kind of like, "you might think you are a fancy nigga, but I'm going to put you in your place by (1) insinuating that you can afford this house yet would steal a $30 fare for shits and giggles; and (2) creating and escalating a conflict out of whole cloth."
I've never been called a nigger by a non-black, but I would think that you would have carte blanche to cuss out anyone who would do so. |

LOL......I've been called a nigger plenty of times. Never by a non-black (at least not to my face). It actually hurts MORE that black people call me that. But for me, no matter who calls me that, it's a fighting word. |

What a lie.
I do love many light skinned women...and in fact, I'm sure that I like them (as a group) far more than they like African women or so called "dark" women.
But your own FAVORITISM keeps you from having true vision about who the ones looking down their noses are.
And although Madonna is no "Cleopatra" come to life---she really is a White Goddess--one whose main charm is that she enjoys being white----and being a goddess myself, I can appreciate that.

I have to disagree with you Edenson. What I personally see Kola doing is making sure we realize that dark skinned women is every inch the goddess that every other woman is considered. What she points out, truthfully, is that the only "black" woman BLACK people are even willing to accept are those that look the LEAST like black women.
Every race of woman in the world can say that they're the most beautiful women in the world, and it's believed. It's a sign of CONFIDENCE and SELF ESTEEM. When Kola says that she believes HER IMAGE is the most beautiful in the world, it's controversial, it's a sign of hate. EVERY WOMAN should feel that she's the most beautiful image on earth. I would think SO LITTLE of Kola if she agreed that every other woman is more beautiful than her own image.
Unfortunately, for this society, it's SO NORMAL for us to think we're BENEATH everyone else that a black (and even more a WOMAN) stating that their image, in their opinion, is SUPERIOR to others is laughed at as crazy.
I'm glad Kola has the nerve at least to say what no one has had the nerve to say so adamantly before: Black women should think of THEMSELVES just as highly as every one else think of themselves. |

Okay, so you don't have a check book? Do you realize that he could have called the police on you? He rendered a service and you didn't pay for it. Him calling you out your name is the least of your worries. He could have had you arrested.
And he knows where you live too? How do you know he won't come back and set your friggen house on fire? Dude, cabbies that drove you home aren't the one's you want to be jerkin around with. |

Mzuri, that's a good point. He definitely should have paid that cabbie the whole $34. But on the other hand, I take a lot of cabs and a lot of times they'll haggle with you on price, particularly if you get them through a car service. And, it seems as if the cabbie really did start the conflict with an insistence that the rider leave a cell phone in the car with them. I've taken a couple of round trips by cab and had to drop someone/something off, and take my phone and wallet, only leaving the contents of my purse.
How I would have handled it: "I'll be back in a minute, you can leave the meter running," and just ignore any "wait, leave your phone" or whatever while I ran into the house. |

I love Mary's voice and I have ALL her CD/s, I'm a huge fan of MARY....but I HATE how she looks.
And my REFERENCE was to him being mad that I liked Madonna as a teen.
These women are MOVIE GODDESSES, and I am a movie buff--specialty being 1920's silent films, because I couldn't speak English when I first came here.

After reading your post again, it really pisses me off. Your conduct is the exact reason why we can't get a cab to even pick us up in many places. They don't want to be bothered with the hassles of dealing with Black ppl.
FYI - When you owe a cabbie money, he has every right to demand collateral from you before you exit the vehicle. If you don't believe me, call the cab company yourself and ask them. Or call your attorney. And be sure to post their reply here.
And you really need to rethink your business etiquette. You do realize that you're supposed to tip a cabbie. So not only did you short him, you didn't even tip him. Yup, that's exactly why the rest of us get treated like shit. Because of ppl like you. |

You think there aren't whites who have haggled a cabby's price down/vomited or peed in his or her car/acted the damn fool, stuff like mimicking accents or bouncing all around the back seat?
Why is it when blacks do something, it justifies the punishment of the entire race, yet when whites do the same thing, no one would say anything like "you just made it hard for whites to hail cabs here"? Come on! I've taken many, many cabs and car services, whether personally or supplied by my employers. I tend to get into decent conversations with the nice drivers, and some of the shit they've seen in their cars would make your hair turn white. And no way can all of those stories represent only black people.
Why do we invite people to punish us as a whole? No other race does this shit. |

I usually take cabs EVERYWHERE I go but I think the difference is that we're women. Yes, I have cabs wait for me at ATMs. Yes, they let me go in the house to get extra money, with no hassle. Yes, they sometimes turn off the meter or give me a discount, especially if I act like I'm interested in what they have to say. And some of them let me go for free when I'm desperate (broke) enough to flirt with them. I think they'd be totally diferent with men, though, especially younger ones. Is it wrong? Probably so. But then gender discrimination should be the argument.

Since I have studied the lives of Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo quite intensely---I DO know quite a bit about what they thought of themselves.
And my point is this....
I can relate to Angela Bassett far more than I can relate to Mary J. Blige.
Now replace Angela Bassett with the women who USED to play her same roles....Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyk, etc.
While I love Whitney Houston with all my heart...I respect what Madonna has done with much less natural talent......EVEN MORE.
Madonna has superior material, socio/political commentary, is a sexual image but also a mother, is imperfect---but LOVES her whiteness and demands it.
But right now....Whitney's a blonde.
I don't see Madonna, however, or any WHITE public female figure.....LIVING with Afro on for months at a time.
Maybe for "one" video.
But not 21 years in "white girl drag" like my girl, Mary J. and Lil Kim.
There is a weakness in "some" black women's IMAGES that is palpable and poisonous.
WHICH IS/WAS MY POINT.
Bette Davis's image was WHOLE and POWERFUL
I got much strength from watching her.
I could give a care about her "real life" racism while I'm watching the GODDESS image on the big screen.
This is the SAME THING that I love about watching Angela Bassett today.
The IN-tactness and the way Angela won't demean her CORE being...just to be accepted.
And yes, celluloid doesn't allow one to ever die. This image creates a kind of GODDESS.
I am not speaking of terrestial bodies, but of MYTHICAL Creations.

Tonya, I think that's really true. I think that gender does have a lot to do with it, and wouldn't imagine myself qualified to talk about how different things might be for a black man. I'm not saying my cab experiences have always been wonderful: I have had to complain to an employer when a car service's drivers repeatedly complained to me about driving to the borough I live in (before the whites started moving in, though), but when a white colleague who lived in the same borough as I would share a car home with me, the drivers never said shit.
But people are acting so aghast that this guy paid $30 on a $34 fare (even though he should have paid the extra $4) and told to cabbie to wait while he got his money. You can bet that whites do stuff like that all of the time, yet no one insinuates that they are the devil incarnate for it. |

LOL, Tonya....I used to do that before I got married. Not even quite flirt, just ask their name, where they're from, etc., and BOOM, free ride!
Maybe if Edenson just batted his eyes, say his feet hurt from walking all day, and asked if the cabbie goes dancing sometimes and what kind of food he likes, he would have saved $30 and not even be expected to pay the other 4. (if luck were on his side and the cabbie was gay).

Dog Ms. Kola - You just like to argue, don't you. I think it's great that you studied those actresses lives, but you can't KNOW what another person thinks. It's impossible. You can't even know what your own children think, let alone some dead actress that you never even met. Besides, ppl's feelings fluctuate. Everything could be wonderful one day, the next day they are all f'd up. I haven't studied them but I heard about their lives in bios, etc. as I enjoy watching the old-time black and white movies. All three of them were either married and divorced multiple times, estranged from their families, estranged from their children, lesbians, suffered thru unrequited love, bad relationships, suffered from depression or were otherwise messed up. And they were actresses. It ain't no way you could tell what those crazy mixed-up bitches were thinking. |

Edenson - Next time you get into a cab and you don't have any money with you, the thing to do is to let the driver know from the very start that you don't have any cash on you and that you will need to enter your home upon arrival to get the money to pay him. That way the cabbie will be informed and he can decide whether he wants you as his fare or not. To wait until you arrive at your destination to inform your driver you have no cash is definitely NOT the correct thing to do, as it only invites negative suspicion. |

I'm trying to get you to see what my original point was.
About the IMAGES women represent and how I related more to some White women's images than to black.
I don't know if you finished reading my last post, which detailed it perfectly.
It doesn't matter what those women thought. I PROJECTED on them by their actions and the images they presented.
Just as Alice Walker points out that Bessie Smith's is a much healthier/more powerful image than Billie Holiday's.
Bessie was not a victim, was not weak, was intensely proud of her blackness and had better material and a much stronger message than Billie Holiday.
For instance, Bessie would never sing "My Man" (about loving a man who beats you) or those types of songs.
But for those reasons, White Media never promoted Bessie Smith. They preferred Billie Holiday, because she died "defeated/broken" and was less threatening.

She really was WILD.
And brilliant.
She wasn't just a singer, but a FULL SCALE artist in every way---and she was revolutionary back then.
I haven't kept up with her, because after Lauryn Hill and Erykuh Badu and those types came out---I stopped listening to/watching Madonna.

Madonna's on the cover of the March Harper's Bazaar and she looks really good. There's also a photo spread and an interview which I haven't bothered to read. Regardless of what you think about her, you must admit that she's still got it goin on to be in her fifties. And before you dog me about subscribing to Harper's, I am an interior decorator and I must keep up with the latest trends in fashion and design.
Anyway, Ms. Kola - I got your point about the goddess thing. But I think sometimes you make too many comparisons. Some things just can't be compared. Everyone knows about Miss Billie Holiday's tragic life and that she had her frailties/weaknesses, but that is part of the reason why she is so much loved. People can relate to her, and still feel sympathetic about the predicaments that she created for her self. Maybe she's not the ideal role model for Black women, but we still love her though. As far as her singing those depressing songs, those are the blues - that's what she sang. I don't think all that stuff she sang about really happened in her real life. And her voice is one of a kind. Ain't nobody tryin to listen to no Bessie Smith so if you tell me that you listen to old Bessie Smith records I'm getting in my  and coming looking for you! |

"Last night I think that I had an apiphany-apifany or however its spelled... anyway, last night was the very first time that I have ever been called a Nigger, or atleast to my face...
I was stranded in Miami, and I couldn't find a ride, so I had no choice but to take a cab home... We got in front of my house, and before the driver would let me out to get the money inside, he wanted all of my posessions... Now I agreed to give him my I.D. and to leave the things I brought from the store in the car... Well, this wasn't good enough for him. He wanted my cell phone too, we kind of got into it, because I didn't want to leave my phone...So he asked for my whole wallet, I gave it to him and I went to get the money... Mind you, we're right in front of my house, and I live in a gated community in the suburbs, so it's not like I could run because there is no place to hide, unlike if I lived in an apartment complex or something....
Anyway I went inside, I gave him $30 and he said that the fare was $34... I didn't want to go back in the house to get $4 so I told him I didn't have it. He replied to me and said, "next time don't try that shit." So I took my stuff out of his hands and I told him to get the fuck out of here. He got out the car and he asked what did I say like he wanted to fight or something. I turned back around and repeated it for him so that this time he could hear me clear. Words were exchanged and all I remember is he said you fuckin Nigger. Then I went on a 15 second rampage calling him every name I could think of, and when I was done I went inside and he drove off. The messed up thing is that when I checked all of my cards and my wallet, I noticed that he still had my I.D.
I felt so violated... I kind of wish that I had replied in different way, instead of expressing my limited vocabulary of curse words... but a part of me felt good because I knew he drove away feeling hurt. That's what I like about curse words, when you use them you can get an immediate reaction, and I knew I mad him feel like shit... But I felt like shit too.
The cab driver was either hispanic or Jewish... I couldn't really tell because his speech was wierd... but I doubt he was Jewish... I never seen one of them driving a cab... Bottom line is that he was white. I try to tell people that not all white people are racist, but after last night my perception has changed. I realized that a lot of them probably dream about the day when they will be able to use the word Nigger. That word made so many emotions come up. I was angry, embarrassed, disrespected.... I'm stilla little shaken up over the whole thing... but I'm glad it happened. It's opened up my eyes a little more as to how people really do look at black people.
Have any of you ever been called a nigger??? Or do ya'll think I should have reacted in a different way???...."
Edenson, even though you weren't really correct in not giving the guy his $34, who cares? MIAMI SUCKS SHIT! Florida is the state that gave us this nightmare of a pResident! I'm only 23 and have been called nigger and even treated like a lab rat. My physician mother has been called nigger to her face by fellow physicians several times, including one of my (ex)psychiatrists, who was east indian.

1)Cabbies are always rude. 2)There was no reason for you to give that man less than he charged you.It made you look like a cheapskate. I live in the suburbs tooand the cab far averages on $30-$40 soI understand. As my mother tells me--always make sure you have an extra 50$ in your wallet in case you need a cab. And 3) you should have left the guy your things from the store-- THAT'S JUST COMMON SENSE.
But....I DO understand Edenson's fustration with asking for support in a time of emotional trauma and getting more criticism instead. It damages one's sense of security.
Don't feel bad about this episode, just learn from it for next time. You can't learn without being burned.
And to everyone else,

first off... Cabs in Florida are not like cabs in big cities like new york. I had to pay $34 for a 10 minute ride in a dusty cab. I doubt that extra $4 hurt his pocket any. And I did leave my things from the store in the car, but he insisted that I leave my phone. So, he could have called the cops on me. I really doubt that I would get arrested for not giving him the extra $4. And since when did four dollars give a white person the right to use the word Nigger. Maybe if the fare was $34.25, I should have went and got that quarter too. Most of you wouldn't have. It's not like I didn't give him anything. Maybe I should have got out in the middle of the street and ran to avoid paying at all... Then maybe I would have showed him how much of a Nigger I could really be. |

No one here is suggesting that the cabbie had a "right" to call you a nigger, but he was provoked because your conduct was unbecoming.
1. You knew what the fare was from the beginning - it's posted on the meter - and if the cab was so dusty, you could have passed on that one and called for another.
2. You should have advised when you first got into the cab that you didn't have the funds on your person so that he wouldn't become suspicious when you sprung this news on him upon arrival at your destination. Since you didn't extend this simple courtesy, he had the right to demand collateral from you. He asked for your phone because he knew it has value - to you.
3. When you brought back the money you should have paid him the full amount plus a tip - even though you felt slighted.
4. Instead you became hostile when he asked for the full amount that was owed him, you grabbed your stuff which he hadn't yet released and to which you probably weren't entitled.
5. And then you told him to get the fuck out of there - probably in a threatening manner.
And then he called you a nigger. What did you expect? Yes, he could have called the police on you, not over the dollar amount but for "theft of services" which is a crime most anywhere. And possibly for the threatening conduct when he asked you for the full amount. If the police had been called, with whom do you think they would have sided? You? And my scenario about him shooting you isn't that farfetched. It happens.
You were in the wrong and I apologize if you're upset, but it's reality. If I were you, I would mail the rest of the money to the cab company because you never know when you might need to call a cab. And try to get your ID card back. Chalk this episode up to experience and move on. |

You know damn well that you wouldn't mail nothin to nobody. First off, when I said that I grabbed my things... He was holding my stuff in his hands, and he had already pocketed the money. It's not like I snatched it from him. It was an easy exchange. Now maybe in a big city where cabs run freely, you would pass on a cab and settle for another a few minutes later if it were dusty. Where I am at, you have to call for a cab. Depending on how close a cab is, it usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. When I called the cab company and asked how much would the ride be, they said under $30. And I don't give tips to cab drivers. I think you're crazy if you do. The prices are already crazy, so forget about the tip. I'll give a tip to the person that cuts my hair for doing an excellent job and not for just doing an average job. Oh, and I didn't tell the guy to get the fuck out of here, until he said, don't try that shit again. You have my stuff in your car, not to mention an i.d. with my address on it, and we're in front of my house... Clearly the same address that was on the i.d. Try what stuff... Another person would have knocked him the fuck out.
And I'm not worried about anyone coming to my house to try anything. You have to go through a security gate first. And they won't let you in unless someone in the house says its alright. |

Your position about tipping is exactly why Black folks frequently don't get good service, everybody assumes we're all cheap and that we don't tip, so why bother. I tip anyone who provides me service and, trust me, I'm not hardly crazy.
As an example, the other day I drove over some debris and got a flat tire. I called for a tow truck because I'm not the type of female that's inclined to change a tire unless I absolutely have to. I tipped the tow truck driver $10 plus the tow fee. And at the repair shop, I tipped the mechanic who serviced my car another $10. It's not customary to tip these ppl, but I did that to show my appreciation for their help - not because I have extra money to throw around. My ass was stranded on the side of the road, the tow truck showed up in record time and I was up and running within an hour after getting to the repair shop - that meant a lot to me since I had to be somewhere.
If the cab company quoted you a flat rate, then you should have informed the driver of that and ensured that it was agreeable with him. Cab drivers are independent operators, the person who took your call couldn't say with certainty how much your fare would total - that was only an estimate. And unless you mentioned that tidbit to the cabbie, he had no way to know what the dispatcher told you.
Anyway, my posts are just my thoughts on the matter and my suggestions. How you conduct your business is entirely up to you. |

Actually, most of us would have just paid him what we owed him. I've never stiffed a cabbie, I can't speak for everyone else here. If you had a checkbook on you, I'm sure he would have taken the remainding 4 dollars in a check. And all of those times when I got a free cab ride, it was offered, I didn't ask.
Also, if he had received the amount for the fare, and you told him you didn't have anything for a tip, he probably would've just said "no problem" and not worried about it. To not get a tip is one thing...to not even get the full fare is somewhat offensive. I've OFTEN not had the money for a tip, but I ALWAYS paid the fare. |

Bottom line: I don't excuse the cabbie's language at all. But keep in mind in the future, when you stiff someone on a service (never even mind the tip), they ARE going to get a somewhat sensitive. |

paying by check to someone you don't know such as a cabbie is not always wise in this day and age. Your name and account number is sometimes all a person needs to access your account, steal your identity, etc. |

I'ma tell you right now... I'da called him all kinds of niggers.... I prob'ly would have kicked his ass even, if I could. That's exactly how I would've felt after being short 4 Whole dollars.. especially if I had to drive a cab for a living. The only reason "nigger" should not have came out of that cab driver's mouth is he's not black. I can certainly understand how he must have felt, though; therefore, I think he had the right to call Edenson just about ANYTHING else. |

You all act like the fare was ten dollars and I only gave him $7... I'm sorry, but I don't tip people for doing their job. I don't tip my doctor, I don't tip the mail man, I don't tip the cashier at Burger King, I don't tip the cable guy. These people already get paid for their jobs, unless they have gone out of their way to complete a requirment beyond their expectations, I don't see the need for a tip. Now maybe some people have money to waste on other people who are just doing their job, and that nice... but I just don't do that. A smile and a thank you better suit you just fine. Maybe if he didn't hastle me about giving him all of my stuff, maybe I just might have gone back and gotten his $4.
And I doubt that most drivers would take a check from anyone. I've never heard of that before. There are stores that won't accept checks let alone a cab driver who has no way of knowing if the name on the check is really yours, if you really have money in your account, and a lot of banks these days will charge your account if you try to cash a bounced check.
And yea, I live in a gated estate... |

There are cabbies who DO take checks, they've ALWAYS accepted it from me when I offer it. Or, if I notice the fare is getting high, I ask them to stop at an ATM machine.
But, here's two options to save you money and trouble the next time: call a friend, or take the bus. |

Gee, Edenson, anybody who lives in a gated estate should have enough money for cab fare. The good news is that if you had had a ghetto address, the company wouldn't have even sent a cab for you. LOL! Sorry, slow day. |
