What are you folks reading these days. I have a big pile that I am picking through. Any good recommendations? Life of Pi - Yann Martel (I missed this the first time out) Cinnamon Kiss - Walter Mosley (I'm not getting into this one as fast as I usually do). Baby Brother's Blues - Pearl Cleage (just cracked this one open) The Key To My Neighbors House: Seeking Justice in Bosnia and Rawanda - Elizabeth Neuffer The Closers - Michael Connelly (furthest along with this book). What's on your nightstand? |

I liked "Life of Pi", too! It was really an interesting change of pace. I faltered in my attempt to make my way to the end of the massive biography of Sam Cooke. And in my ongoing affinity for non fiction and biographies, I am currently into - I am sheepish to admit - the autobiography of 50's icon Tab Hunter. Back then, he was the Brad Pitt of his day, and to now find out that he is gay and has written a book revealing all the juicy details of the liaisans betweem him and other macho movie stars who were secretly gay is just too tantalizing to resist. |

I'm on a non-fiction kick these days. I'm currently reading "Get on TV" by Jacquie Jordan. I've been hearing good things about "So you call yourself a man" by Carl Weber and "Changing Faces" by Kimberly Lawson Roby. I wouldn't mind checking these 2 titles out as well. |

Hi Whistlingwoman, I just finished "Erasure" by Percival Everett and I really enjoyed this "coded" work. Next up is Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet B. Stowe, yet another book I've been meaning to read but never got around to. Because of the positive reviews here for Life of Pi, I'll probably move to that after UTC. |

Besides my dissertation proposal (not exactly "pleasure reading" right now LOL) I am enjoying Patricia Williams' "Open House." I keep going back to the novel of the Haitian revolution I may have mentioned here before, "All Souls Rising" but I can't seem to go through that as quickly as I usually do w/fiction. Next up is a couple of Zadie Smith books and "All ALone in the World: Children of the Incarcerated." And, thanks to you all, a buncha other titles to be added! |

Kite Runner is a coming of age story of an Afgan who confronts his own class, religious, and caste issues during Russian occupation. Or, as friend of mine says, an explanation of Afgans to the West, aka white people. |

Kaotic: You asked me to get back to you on that Tad Hunter autobiography. I was kinda disappointed in it. Not a lot of dirt. LOL But an interesting chronicle about Hollywood during the 1950s and early 60s. What I was surpised to learn was that Tad carried on a long term secret affair with Anthony Perkins - who played Norman Bates in "Psycho." The interesting thing about Perkins was that after about 20 years, he decided he wasn't gay and ended up getting married and having children. Too late, alas, he later died from AIDS. |

Yes, Kaotic, and just think of the legacy Tony Perkins left his children to deal with. But as long as they know he loved them, I guess that will make up for a multitude of sins. BTW, I love your screen name. It fits right in with the atmosphere. LOL |

U R absolutely right..... I hope the kids are strong enough to withstand the legacy of their father.... As for my name..... Yes....Kaotic is the story of my life and probably why I was drawn to this board! There is always something jumpin off, crazy catfights and sexual inuendo's and I am lovin every minute of it! I do get ticked off from time to time when the board strays and turns the thread into skin color issues..... but....I deal with it because overall the people here are generally intelligent individuals that's passionate with what they have to say. I love dry sarcatic humor and I can always count on someone to bring it! ...who can ask for anything more? LOL |

Hey, SisGal! I finally finished your book. I say finally, because this was kinda a long-ass book, girlfriend, and you know ol Cynique has a short attention span. Anyhoo, it was a pretty good read. You definitely have writing skills; you're a good storyteller, your characters were believable and you have a great ear for dialogue, all of which is why I think you're more of a Danielle Steele than a Michael Criterton. Yes, your style flowed, but this is what also robbed it of the taut urgency that I look for in the "thriller" genre. But, what do I know? I'd give it 3 stars. |

Hey Cynique, 3 stars are better than none at all.. (smiling)...hey, the trouble with genres is most publishers and others perceive it to be...it is often hard for me to put my writing in a certain genre..i started off thinking i was writing a mystery...sooooo..ima just keep writing and yet you readers determine...thanks again for the purchase and the review...good storyteller, believeable characters and a style that flowed...all positives...i guess to write in that Thriller category..i'm gotta work on that taut urgency. Hey A_womon, where u been hiding? its available via amazon, barnes and noble.com, booksamillion.com, walmart.com....your choice girl and just like Cyn, don't forget to holla. |

I don't know if Walmart will have it on the shelf, so if you are probably better off ordering off of amazon or one of the other online bookstores. Congrats on the agent and girl i hear you about the revising and writing...i am trying to finish up another book myself...while shopping another one. I'm also busy publishing another writers book, got my own publishing company now, starting small but shooting for the stars...if you know what i mean. Like now, i should be writing, and here i am again surfing...(lol) Stay in touch! |
