What did you think of them? I must say that I absolutely HATED how vulgar it was and that (as a non-thug) I couldn't relate with the subject matter, and, again, it was disgusting, vulgar, and just ugly. However, the words, the phrases, and just the very way he strings them together is PURE POETRY and he writes very beautifully. He described a girl he was once in love with as a teen, and his disappointment to learn that "brute life had hacked her hideous" in "The Naked Soul of Iceberg Slim". Recalling his receiving charity food: "...The slippery sawdust on the rough pine floor would be like shredded ice against the slick, stiff soles of my county relief brogans. ...Tatter paupers filed past the cubicles. Anemic joy lit their drawn faces as bored county clerks shoved a month's ration of relief groceries across the dusty cubicle counters." I know it all seems "wordy", but the way he describes things seems to make it all the more "real". Even when he describes the most vulgar parts of his life, he uses words that not only lets you know what was going on his mind, but he makes you feel it. In some instances, you may even understand it. Just wondering how you all feel about his books. I haven't read them all, but I intend to. |

I have read Pimp several times. I read Mama Black Widow, the Naked Soul of Iceberg Slim, Trick Baby. The thing that many people don't get about Pimp is that it is a cautionary tale. Everybody fixes on the high times he had and not the times he was in jail or on the run. |

Hello All, I have read and loved the books that I read by Iceberg Slim. Renata, I am glad to see that you are gaining an appreciation for his talents. It has become to common to connect Slim with the trash that is being put out today as Thug Lit. Slim could write, these other people today can not. |

I thought he was a gifted writer. But thought of him more like a musician. I loved his books, although I didn't necessarily like "HIM" as a person. But he was very talented. I loved DONALD GOINES!!! who I met during a terrible illness he had at Cedar Sinai Hospital.

I read Pimp. Don't remember much of it except for the turn out process. He made the girl brush her pubes with a hard brush to make them silky. Tried it. It didn't work. I was like 15. I know that's TMI! Also remember that's where I first heard the term Gorilla Pimpin'. I come from the south side of Chicago. I didn't need to read about pimps, I saw them all the time. Utter clowns. Never did get how a girl could give up all her money to a fool in a flashy suit. Knew a pimp in Atlanta named "King Carlos". He had three girls, "Ebony Queen" "Duchess" and "Princess". They all wore matching outfits, horrible chalky make-up, and had to call him when they got to work at the strip club and tell him "I love my man". A couple of girls tried an intervention. It didn't work, they stayed right there. He did tell me that I'd be a horrible ho cuz I talked too much, not that I interested. He also tried to impress me with his "spanish" which sounded like "crakf gheit htetit tuetuuj". Jibberish. I told him I'd been speaking Spanish for over ten years. In Spanish. Needless to say, he didn't understand a word. He also made his own bar-b-que sauce called "DuPree's - The sauce that cost". And he had a record called "Skeezer Girl" with his three year old baby on the cover. Upon that memory, I think I'll take Iceberg Slim over the real deal anyday! Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction huh? |
