As much I hate self-promotion here on the board, I've been urged to post this closeout special for those who might be interested.

Hello Enchanted. I don’t believe I have yet had the honor of making your acquaintance. Nice to meet you. My self-promotion comment was not meant to cause a rouse nor to demean the act/art of self promotion. Rather I try not to self promote on the board as it’s a great vehicle to discuss books, reading and the like. From reading previous posts over the past years, self-promotion doesn’t always prompt the best discussions.
To address your concerns, I do realize the value of self-promotion and strive to become better at it every day. I am a avid supporter of self-publishing (although I refer to it as independent publishing). I am such a supporter that I have six independently published books.
Thanks so much for your response. I’m honored when my words, no matter how terse or frivolous, prompt a kickback of any sort.

Hey Y'all I prompted Brian to let folks on the board know about the book he had available.
This was more for the benefit of the lurkers in book clubs. I think this is a tremendous deal.
Brian does not like to toot his own horn on this board but he does self-promote and is one of the more popular independently published authors out there.
I think Enchanted was simply saying that self promotion is directly related to success. Which I agree with to a certain extent.
The trick is self promoting with out becoming a nuisance or being perceived as self centered egotistical, etc, etc

Yes, Troy---and ONE THING that happens to "successful people"--------is that JEALOUS people often begin to claim that the successful ones are "self-centered, egotistical, etc.etc."......there are SOME OF US "self-promoters" who's PROMOTION is more entertaining than the damned product.
And there are others who have no flair, no imagination, don't know how to write a book proposal----they SULK and WHINE because they can't do what the "egotisticals" can do.
So let's put that in the lesson book as well, because it makes all the difference in who has what it takes to be A-list and C-list.
You might recall that I myself was supposed to be OVER WITH years ago.
Though I stand for a lots of socio-political issues....I would also like to be a SUCCESS, I would like to get PAID, and I would like to have the POWER that money brings....to create the IMAGES and ART that I feel will nourish and strengthen my community.
For instance, I can't make movies about black women---if I don't have the CLOUT and MONEY to do so.
A lot of people sit up on this board and talk about what NEEDS to be done---who's not doing what----but they don't use their LIVES to go out and attain what it takes to make REAL CHANGE.
Being poor, noble and invisible doesn't bring about CHANGE or revolution. To have revolution---you have to back your shit up with ACTION.
I am, as I stated from day one, an affirmed Capitalist, and I will not stop until I am more and more SUCCESSFUL at what I do.

The word "presumptuousness" was conspicuously absent when describing over-zealous self promoters. Such people assume others are receptive to be bombarded with their endless marketing ploys. Brian's post was painless because he apparently has enough confidence to let his work speak for itself. |

Cynique, Brian's post was not only painless but beneficial to anyone willing to avail themselves of his offer.
I don't think zealous self promoters are think about what others think (presumption never enters the picture) -- they are only think about getting their name out and moving product -- period.
As the competition heats up you will be more of this zelous, aggressive even, self-promotion.
