I attended my first Book Expo America (BEA) in 2000. I thoroughly enjoyed the event. I’d been working on AALBC.com for about 2 ½ years at that point. So I found it really gratifying to meet; some of the authors I’d read and written so much about; and some the industry professionals with whom my only contact was via email. Also, the additional contacts made were priceless. In 2000, a significant Black presence at BEA was a relatively new phenomenon. In 2002, I spoke with some of the industry veterans, and was told that just a few years earlier one could walk the floor of the convention center, where BEA was being held, and not see another Black face. Today Black people are making a significant contribution and impact in the publishing industry. While many in the majority are lamenting sagging book sales; more African Americans are selling more books than ever before – and our presence at BEA reflects this trend. Below are some links where you can find photos, videos and stories more about previous BEAs and African American Pavilions.
