Hello All Okay...Okay.....I had to think long and hard about this one. I didn't know how to tell my little Thumper family why I've been away. I didn't even know if I wanted to or needed to. So here it goes. I was arrested for .....ahhhh ahhhhh.... well...ahhh, BANK ROBBERY. Damn, before all of this I thought I had a book of my life and I thought I only needed a few more good chapters but DAAAAAAAMN! Ouuuu Weeee, what a ride. Now the begging question is......did I do it. Now I know what they mean when they say "be careful what you ask for". The experience of being locked up is a book in itself but damn talking about drama. Have you ever tried to wipe your ass while being shackled and handcuffed? Do you remember Richard Pryor's stage acts. In one of them he said he went to the joint or jail and kept them boys laughing to keep them off his ass and then said "thank god for the penitentary. Well let me tell you, you will grow some large *ones* real quick because some of my brothers are very dangerous and ain't coming out no time soon and want you to stay with them! Anyway, it's been a ride. Shocked....SO WAS I. Carey Carey |

Carey, what the heck are you talking about? Did you really stop being a medi-vac pilot to go somewhere and rob a bank? Did you actually serve time for something you didn't do? And are you maybe planning to sue for millions of dollars? huh, huh? |

Hello Cynique I knew you would be one of the first to raise all the "proper" questions. I should have had you as a lawyer. I noticed you asked (did you do it?)(did you stop (flying))?....(am I planning to sue?) After I wrote the post I knew I had created a monster to some degree. I would love to answer from the voice of a man wrongly accussed of bank robbery, one of the most intriguing crimes in the eyes of the American public. Mainly because few have talked to or know a bank robber. I suppose one could rob banks for years and lead a double life because most bank robbers do not fit the "image" of a "robber". Bank Robbery is generally not a violent crime. However individuals lives can come into jepardy. I will not address guilt but I was offered 25 years, 17 mandatory. Let me tell you some things and see what you think. A man is walking to the store to buy some cigarettes. He notices a man about 20ft away run in front of him. The man whom is wearing some kind of stocking over his face and his hands appear to be covered stops and begins to disrobe. It's dusk/dark out and it's hard to see what this man is doing. Now the man that was walking to the store shifts his weight to get a better peak at thie man but is cautious and tries to remain still and quite. HOwever a peace of gravel moves beneath his feet and the hooded man glances over his shoulder and his face appears in the moon light. startled the man runs off leaving something behind. The curiosity of the store bound man leads him to the sack of money apparently left behind by the fleeing man. Now as the money is being investigated by the second man, he hears loud demands of "get on the fucking ground" "get your hads up and lay down on the ground". The startled man looks to his left to see what appears to be a gun pointing at him. The man can't make out the image because of the darkness and assumes it's the first "masked person" that had laid low and came back to get his damn money. The shock man now has to decide what the f**k to do. He figures the dark subject in the wings might not want to discuss his position so he decides to run. The man that was pointing what turned out to be a large gun was the police. It now seems as if the police officer must have seen the subject run by as he was working off duty in a nearby jewelry and just happened to have his police radio on his hip. It has been said that he too did not know the fleeing man was a suspect in a bank heist until he heard it come over the radio. So it appears as if the man walking to get cigarettes was in closer proximity to the masked man when he disrobed, than the officer. Although the "cigarette" man did not have on any of the articles of clothing as the man that entered the bank and had nothing in his possesion that would tie him to the bank, he was arrested for 1st degree Bank Robbery. Now picture living in a system in which you are quilty?black/guilty/black. Until your black ass can prove you are not and the system says you must have done it or you would not have ran. Suppose it appears to be a slam dunk, "THEY" are saying we got our man and you are the man they are talking about. Lawdy Lawdy Lawdy. Now it's easy for someone to say, "F**k that Sh*t, am taking it to 12 MEMBERS OF THE JURY when they are not looking at 25 years. Let me hear what you think! Questions etc. |

Incredible! I'm stunned;almost at a loss for words, Carey. What a nightmare! Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time! And that's an awful stiff sentence for a first-time offender. Considering that the evidence was circumstantial and assuming that you had no past criminal record and were gainfully employed and had no need to rob a bank, you should've had some kind of a defense. If you were not able to "beat the rap" this is a classic example of a miscarriage of justice. All I can add is that I hope you were able to prove your innocence and that you will successfully seek financial compensation for wrongful arrest. |

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Are you saying you've been locked up for "allegedly" robbing a bank. A bank with cameras inside to videotape the would-be criminals? A video to show approximate, height, weight and demeanor of a bank robber. And they were able to hold you for an extended period of time? First: You need to all the local newspaper because that's a story. Second: What kind of house are you gonna buy with all that money the city gives you from the lawsuit? Third: Man...are you for real?

Carey: Nobody believes it until they are caught up in the Justice System. It is not innocent until proven guilty, but guilty until proven innocent--and then everybody will just say you got off or got out of it on a technicality. This is just how easy it is. Hope you're all right. |

Hello all First of all, it is no joke. You have to understand that the police are not libel unless the information or evidence they used to arrest you holds no weight. Yes, i (used) to have a 6 figure income, I (used) to own rental property. The bank camera had a image of a person about my height. This suspect was robed head to toe. He didn't......I believe......say anything. I've been able to talk to one of the employees that was in the bank at the time (they attend the same church that I do!) Nor did he/she pass a note. Look, if a hooded person comes into a banks waving "something" you know they are not there to deposit money. See, I 've had plenty of time to "think about all of this and it was a f**ked up spot to be in. I had to be real and consider what they had and what they **didn't** need or have. Remember, I'am black and nothinings fair in the legal system. Concider this, the arresting police officer report said "When I asked Carey where his car was he replied "I didn't drive to "The Bank". Of course this is a lie. I said, " I was walking to get some cigarettes, I didn't drive down here. Now, this is mister white police mens word against "the Bank Robber's". Notice I did'nt say "suspected bank robber because that's the way it goes in the minds of many. Lets back up a minute. When I was a youth......many years ago......as joke I stole the entire basketball team's tennis shoes. Yep, I did that. They didn't think it was funny, partly because I sold them (lol). Now I'am a thief in the eyes of many. Of course to some it does not matter that I went on to serve in the Air Force and continued my education afterwards. I've been gainfully employed my entire life. I've raised my family, I believe I've been a good father. In fact one of my childen is presently in thailand on a business trip. She's the one that lives in Atlanta and is raising my grandchild. Here is what's on the table. Do I trust a jury of my "peers" to look past my color and the lies of the detectives and the curcumstantial evidence against me or do I take a plea? Before you answer consider that I have lived the american dream and DO NOT......DO NOT....wish to shoot craps with the rest of my life. If I take the plea which is considerably less the 25 years I could poosibly walk away with probation yet be a felon. I've asked this question to many and most say "damn that's one hellava spot to be in". Some say the lord will take care of you. I don't know, My bond was $100,000, in Iowa you can not post 10%. I was moved from jail to jail limiting my access to family and friends. See, when you arrive at a different jail you can not simply walk up to a phone and start calling. First of all you have to have money and it's not like it's in your pockets. Oh no, it has to be on you books and of course none of that info is there when you arrive. I don't know is my movement was purposefull to keep me from handling my business but freqquently my family and friends didn't even know where I was. I was even moved out of the state on several occasions. I not crying I'am only trying to give you a brief overview of what was before me. Bondsmen do not generally like to touch "bank robbers" facing long sentences. They read the papers too and they are only human and they also have an opinion of guilt. As Chris said, "that's just how it is". One has to be careful not to decieve themselves with "they can't do that" and "they don't have enough to convict". If they did not think they could send your ass to jail they would not take you in front of a jury! Besides, they have nothing to lose, they like taking "niggers" to court. Believe this, they will do any and everything to win. Yes, they will lie, cheat and play the race card. Let me add a little something else to this thang. This bank had been robbed twice before. One time the President was in town and the police could not get around the protection of the president and the robber got away. Soooooooo these bank folks were seriously mad and want someones head. Also it's important to note that I live in this area and although I didn't do that robbery, I was a prime suspect after this last one. They thought, oh yeah, we got this MF this time. Of course this is not evidence, this too plays in the minds of the jury "white jury". Hey Brian, thanks for the comments. I remember my wife and I meeting you in our little community. Always lurking......I wish it was a joke! Now you know why my replies are not timely. I've just about lost everything. My belongings are scattered around for various reasons. Don't be affraid to give your honest opinion. What would you do? Remember a guilty verdict for me at my age..........don't go there Thumper......means it time for me to lay dowwn. There is life after being classified as a felon. It probaably would be a little more "bumpy". Be real and "real". Cyn-Cyn....with love.

What does your lawyer say? How long will it take? How much will it cost? Do you have it? Can your lawyer build a case for reasonable doubt or is it all gloom and doom? How long do you have to decide? Again, is this for real? What about your family? What do they think? All of these are questions that would have to weigh in. At a glance, it seems that it is a messed up situation and you are screwed no matter which way you go. If there is not jail time involved which, to me, doesn't seem likely, I would say take the plea. If you have to do some jail time, I would say fight it. |

Carey, I'm real sorry to hear about your situation. It is unbelievable, but of course, i know you would not tell such a story, unless it was true. I am wishing you the best, and the answer to the above question...you did the right thing for you, and that is what is most important. Take care, and look forward to enjoying the rest of your life, free. |

Carey: If you didn't do it, and don't intend to be a gangsta for the rest of your life, don't take the plea no matter what it is. I cannot guarentee, nor can anybody, that you might not still be found guilty--but at least you can appeal-- Small comfort thought that is. I don't think you should discuss this too much here. These posts could be brought into court and used against you. Can you come up with ANY evidence--an alibi, a computer or phone record a witness, to prove that it could not have been you (that is, you were elsewhere at the time the bank was getting robbed? |

WOW Carey! I’m so sorry to see this has happened to you. You’ve always come across as a pretty reasonable person and you seemed to have thought this through as best you can, although I can’t imagine how. I also can’t imagine going to prison at “our” age so trust that you’ve done the best thing for you at the time. I recently spent 6 days on a jury, while not nearly as serious as your charge, I came away with the knowledge of how arbitrary juries and trials can be depending on the parties involved. You just don’t know who to trust. My best wishes to you in handling this and take care. And after this situation you may find 72 Hour Hold a timely read. I recommend it.

Hello All Hey, thanks for the feedback. Yeah Chris, I'am aware of the risks involved by my posts and I'am being careful. I have been fortunate to have spoken to some of you "offline" and you know who you are. Many times I wanted to talk with you about it but I didn't know if it was too much or that you would assume guilt which I didn't need to fight through at the time. USC, you actually got a little pissed when I didn't come forth and that's cool........I took it as a women's thang (smile). Always-Lurking, you came up with all the relavant questions. Money is always an issue. Amazing as it may seem, some of my family members didn't ask if I did it, they asked WHY.....yeah, my family. Taking that into account I had to decided how complete strangers would judge me. I hear you Chris......go down fighting! JMHO, yeah, how does one have an alibi when one is actually in the area, walking by themselves. But check this out: The cigartte man and the hooded man crossed paths over a block away from the bank, yet the cigarette man was the only one there when the officer arrived.......Damn! Sisgal, again thanks for the book, I needed a little "fiction". Hey, as I was reading the book I remembered that you let me preview it. But at first I thought you had aahhh.......SMILE.....ahhh..you know. I was sitting there reading a few chapters and thought "damn I've read this story before". Then I thought "damn you dope, ol'girl let you read her drafts.....daaaa". Hey, you guys know I've always loved coming here and sharing my life and kicking it about books. I've pissed some of you off by kicking it more than talking about books. But what would a good suspense story be without a good ending......so... consider this. There is the possibility that I committed the crime.......possibility. There is the possibility that I've lived a double life. Nawwww? |

A book huh, yeah, like I said, I knew I had a book prior to this drama but daamn, at what price and it ain't over yet. Now all I need is some closer and a writer. Be good and thanks for the holler. Are you still in Ohio. I'am still trying to get my hands on that erotic book that ol'girl wrote. She went from Althea, a young girl with issues to....ahhhhh....let's get it on...(lol). I guess she got caught up . Again, believe you me, this ain't fiction, this is a brother that fell in the rabbit hole! |

Carey, Carey, Carey I am speechless, angry, and so sorry that you have been drawn into such a situation. I kept reading and waiting for you to say...okay, everybody this is really just a plot for my novel, but you never stopped and then I believed and knew it was for real. Can I be of assistance, do anything to help? Just let me know. This kind of injustice is so frustrating, but I will fight with you if need me as I am sure so many of us here at the corner will. As for that new erotic novel...it's at the printer and I will send you the first copy when I get them back, I promise. Please stay well and I will keep you prayed up from my end. |

Hello I would like to thank everyone for the feedback. I cut a deal! I can only assume that some would never take a plea if they didn't commit the crime. well, I hope they are never put in a position to even consider it. Bullshits ain't nothin', let's talk about real. It's sort of like the man that's approached while he's in his car and told it's a car-jack. Some would "say" they wouldn't give up their ride for nothing and that they would go down fighting for their ride. Shit.... let that pistol be pointed at their skull and then see how brave they are. AND: Let's say they fought and lost. They become but a memory. Yeah, folks are going to talk that shit for a while BUT your ass is a distant thought nevertheless. Do what you do but I can come up, but I can't if am "down". Yeah, it's a MF'er but hey, I am still here. Let me say that again....I AM STILL HERE. Shit, ZANE even hollered, so I ain't doing to bad (BIG SMILE). OOOUUUUUU WEEEEEEE! |
