I watching The Wire last night; when, low and behold, homo thug extrodinare Omar was reading a book in his jail cell. Not just any book but Ghetto Heat, by Hickson (http://authors.aalbc.com/hickson.htm)

I saw that and I was trippin on the fact that Omar reads. Who knew. Priceless publicity for the book, I wonder if product placement was involved or what. Either way, Hickson's got it goin on!!! |

That was a slick move--now Hickson needs to get the guy who plays Omar to talk about why he was reading the book (hope it wasn't just a prop) |

Chris, it's called acting. The point of product placement is subliminal adverstising. So it doesn't matter if he were reading it or not. Thousands if not more have been exposed to this author's work on the screen. I say "Clever!" |

Be that as it may: How much more effective it would be if the actor actually said "I really read it and I like it"?-as opposed to--"They just had it laying around and I picked it up and pretended I like it--really I don't care a fig for it."

Or even more effective that the producers or the writers or somebody on the show really likes it and included it as a prop-- Or is that what they are reading now in the lockups in urban America? |

Don't underestimate the power of adverstising (verbal/non-verbal). It would be interesting to know if Hickson's book sales have increased though. |

Actually, I'm sure Hickson's book sales have increased. "How much" is the determinant. |

We need to get hold of the actor who plays Omar and question him--get him to play it up and talk about it. It could only be good publicity if he digs the book--then again he robs and kills people on the show--maybe if we can get one of the actors who plays a cop-- |

Hickson told me one of the directors (maybe he said producer) liked the book and requested if it could be used as a prop.

Hello everyone, this is HICKSON, CEO of GHETTOHEAT, author and publisher of the book, "GHETTOHEAT". I thank you all for your comments and for your support. The head director of the HBO series, "The Wire" actually contacted me and asked for my permission to incorporate my book into the show; being that he'd read it before and felt that it would be relevant to the show and scene that featured the character "Omar" reading it in prison; knowing also my mission to fight illiteracy worldwide. Although I'm truly thankful to have one of "GHETTOHEAT's" productions showcased on the series, I'm really happy about the fact that it showed a man, a Black man actually reading literature, hopefully dispelling the myth that "Black men don't read books." For me, this is a major statement, one that will forever go down in history, showing a character portraying a "thug", actually enjoying reading a book, perhaps showing other men that it's actually "cool" and important to read books also. I feel truly blessed to have been documented, being apart of pop culture, as well as having my book, "GHETTOHEAT" featured, one many of my supporters feel that is totally relevant to todays time and Urban America. I've read your comments...to answer a few of your questions, no, my book wasn't just placed as a prop, it had more significance to the scene. No, I didn't pay for product placement to be featured on "The Wire", as I'm sure that would've been EXTREMELY expensive. I'm not into being "slick", HICKSON@GHETTOHEAT.COM just makes it "DO-WHAT-IT-DO!" (Wink!) Have my sales increased since the viewing...what do you think? (Smile!!!) Also, convict's are major supporters at GHETTOHEAT, inwhich urban novels aren't they only genre of books they read. From the hundreds that I keep intouch with on a daily basis, having many write me from various facilities nationwide, it is to my understanding that they read all books of different genres, ones that hold they interest. People, once again, I thank you all for your interest and support in the GHETTOHEAT MOVEMENT. Log on to GHETTOHEAT.COM for more info on what's next to come. Peace and Love! HICKSON GHETTOHEAT: THE HOTNESS IN THE STREETS!!!
