I was one of those who didn't care for The Known World (bored to TEARS) but am willing to give some of his short stories a chance. I did a search on The Known World discussions a while back and was glad to find I wasn't alone! I'm also reading Reading Like a Writer by Francine Prose, which has given me an entirely new appreciation for subtext and slowing down enough to savor stories instead of devouring them.
