Hello All, I know these rules are making their way around the internet. I just read them for the first time yesterday. I agree with Bill 100%! Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it! Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself. Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both. Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity. Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them. Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room. Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they will give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life. Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time. Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop or get off the couch and go to jobs. Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you will end up working for one.

I couldn't agree more! This younger generation and its presumption of privilege and entitlement need to be shocked with a jolt of reality! |

Bill Gates is full of shit. These are the usual platitudes and bullcrap these multi billionaires toss out to the peons to justify the fact that they are screwing them. I wonder what advice he would give all the people he screwed to get where he was--all the people whose ideas he stole all the little competitors he ran out of business. I can go down each of these rules and illustrate how they are bullcrap and you two could too but it is a waste of time. Cynique--your attitude is shameful. You know the young people feel the same way about your pension and social security. I hope you can feel the same way when they give you the shaft for being a "greedy geezer" Really. |

Oh shut up, chrishayden. All you do is blow smoke out of your ass, picking and choosing who you think deserves your approval, basing your anointing on nothing more than your emotional inconsistent irrational criteria. What millionaire do you know made it to the top by being a jelly-spined wuss in a dog eat dog world. You have to be ruthless and innovative and the idea that this generation of slackers should not be chided for their clueless approach to life is ridiculous. If Gates hadn't made it, he wouldn't have all his millions to throw around on the causes that losers like you can only yap about. |

BTW, you bloated baby boomer, I don't collect a social security check. I draw a postal pension which comes from my 30 years of contributing a fair percentage of my salary to a retirement pool which the privatized postal service now invests for its annuitants. |

Cynique: So what? The younger people say you don't need it, that since you can't work anymore you should be sent to the glue factory and they can put your contributions to better use. One day, one day, right before they put your lights out you will moan, "Chris Hayden was right. Why didn't I listen to him?" |

You're so pathetic, chrishayden. The thought of being sent to the glue factory doesn't terrify me. I've lived my life and I have no problem confronting my mortality or my obsolescence. If I die tomorrow, I die tomorrow. You may be a cowardly punk who will have to be dragged kicking and screaming into that great good night. But not me. The quote "life is a journey that is homeward bound," resonates just fine with me.
