NATE, the notoriously hard-edged, uncompromising novel by author P. Lewis, has just been selected as winner of an American Book Award for 2006.
Published by Back House Books, NATE is the story of a young black drifter named Nathan James Morris, who, rejected by his family, seeks his fortune in the Marines, in a prestigious and corrupt black university, and with a succession of untrustworthy (and often lethal) friends and lovers. "P. Lewis is an original talent whose English cuts through a lot of contemporary BS like a butcher knife," Ishmael Reed has written of NATE.
The award will be presented at a ceremony in Berkeley in late September.
The American Book Award is a non-profit award given to American writers, regardless of race, gender or ethnic background, highlighting outstanding achievement in the field of literature. |

I was acknowledging Schakspir's apparent literary success. Because this a website for authors, publishers and readers African American literature; and because Schakspir is frequent poster; I consider such to be the appropriate thing to do.
I suppose like you I have not agreed with everything Schakspir has expressed here. But then, I've disagree with ALL of the posters here on some occassions, including YOU. |

What does plunging into the pool of obscene derogatory postings that regularly appear on this board in the heat of dissent, have to do with whether or not a person's writing skills earn him an honor? People come out of all kinds of profanity-laced bags on this board, their positions and sentiments changing from day to day. That's what keeps it from being monotonous around here. A pool of judges bestowed an honor on P. Lewis, recognizing his book as being worthy of note. If people want to congratualte him on this asccomplishment, then that's their prerogative. |

And shakspir, my thing is, so what if others do say profane things and act ignorant, why is that an excuse for you to do it???? It's one thing to post some things anonymously and act silly on this board, but once you have published something and your name is out there and you have WON AN AWARD for writing for heaven's sake--why in the world would you risk losing readers or offending a lot of potential buyers of your work?

Lemme backtrack. I do believe there should be some limits as to what published particularly when and where children might have access to such.
So it is for THAT reason Schakspir tranny pic bothered me. But Troy handled it, as I expected he would. So I'll assume Schak' will probably abstain from posting such again.
I admit I have sort of an empathy for the kinds of Black caricatures that Schakspir posted. I'm not sure why, actually. I guess it’s akin to why I'll still exchange the 'N-word' amongst loved ones.
I guess they mind me of where we come from.
And dude's as every bit entitled to fire off racially-tinged invectives as anyone else is here. Dayam whether or not I like or concur with'em.
Because like Cynique says, it’s the PROBABILITY that any of us might pull some crazy shyt out of the bag that keeps things lively around here.
