Hi there, From time to time I get letters and e-mails from readers who are fans of my work and want to know how they can support my writing. While I would love to tell them to buy more copies of the book for family and friends, the reality of the matter is that probably will not happen. Still there are many other things readers can do to help support their favorite authors. Here is my top 5: 5. Show up at a book discussion- When your favorite author comes to town; be sure to show up as his or her book discussion and bring a friend. There is no need to buy a book if you cannot afford one. Just your presence alone will help draw a crowd of people (and hopefully buyers) to help support the author. 4. Post a review-Many people would like to know if a book is worthwhile before they take the risk and make that purchase. Lots of people look at professional and customer reviews on sites like Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com before making the decision to drop their hard-earned dollars on a book. Your review will help them make that decision. Even if the review is one or two lines, it lets other readers know that there are other people who have read the book by the author you enjoy. There is strength in numbers. 3. Email mistakes-If the book you enjoyed has typos and grammar errors, be sure to e-mail the author to let him or her know. The mistakes can be corrected in future printings and can save the author future embarrassment. 2. Talk to your librarian-If the book you love is not at your local library, talk to your librarian about ordering it. Libraries use your tax dollars to buy books. They also buy books in bulk. If you help to get a book in the library, it increases awareness of the book to the general public and sales dollars for the author. Plus, you get to read the book without coming out of pocket (at least directly out of pocket). 1. Talk to your local bookstore manager-Just like with libraries, some bookstore managers may need a little nudging before they decide to order and stock a book. Do not be afraid to let the manager know about the books by your favorite author. I will be speaking about my experiences as an author and owner of a new publishing company at the Essence of Motown Writers Conference in downtown Detroit, November 10-12. Word-of-mouth can be effective. If you like a book, recommend it to someone else, or pass it along to a friend. This may not increase present sales but could create new fans who will buy future books of an author they've been introduced to by another reader. |
