Hello All, See, before I left for school, I left you all a long ass-ted list of books to read and YAWL AIN'T READ 'EM! I'M HOT!! Yawl should still be talking about Olympia Vernon's new book, A Killing in This Town! My Lord that woman can sho nuff WRITE! I am in the middle of the book and I am LOVING THE HELL OUT OF IT! A Killing in This Town is about a young white 13 year old boy, in a Mississippi town, as a manhood ritual has to call a black man out of the black man's home, drag him and lynch him. The book is da BOMB! The story, naturally, reminded me most of Faulkner. Her writing style has mature, while it deepened, there is space and air around the words and phrases. Her writing has now achieved grace. I'm loving this book! So, if you really are in the market for an excellent book, here's one that you should not ignore. |

Olympia Vernon is a gifted Southern writer who has managed to eschew labels and comparisons to Black/African-American/Women writers. She is a sensual writer of realism whose touch of the absurd is so well written, it appears as poetry; although it is rooted in the reality of the psychic pain and trauma of those affected by poverty, race, and injustice. I have and will continue to love her spirit. I once told her that she was another American treasure, and her works have borne that out. |
